About Carbs4Kids

We started the Carbs4Kids App in 2022 with a dream to make it easier for children with type 1 diabetes to learn about carb-counting in a more relatable way.

Our Story

Our son Max was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as the age of just 20 months. Now 10 years old, we have been trying to teach him about the carbohydrates in his food, so that as he gets older, he will have more confidence and knowledge about the food that he eats. When he goes on playdates, the App on his mobile device will enable him and his friends’ parents to quickly see how many carbohydrates are in the food that he eats, giving him more independence to weigh his food and carb count correctly.

Why this app?

We always found other food apps were not very child focussed. What child wants to see how many carbs there are in a glass of wine, a pint of beer or an oversized plate of food? With Carbs4Kids, all items of food and drink are tailored for children up to the age of 17.We are now on a mission to help educate as many children as we can and become more independent through our easy-to-use carb-counting app.The app is designed to teach children the importance of weighing their food to get accurate bolus amounts.

Supporting the work we do

When you purchase our App, you are helping to support the work that we are doing behind the scenes – developing new features, increasing the food library as well as general running costs.

Activity Packs

We also send out a monthly activity pack to everyone who has downloaded the app and subscribed to our mailing list. The activity pack is fun-filled pack of puzzles, games and quizzes, designed to further develop your child’s learning.

Scales & Labels

Our App uses the ‘Scales & Labels’ method to help you learn carb-counting.Using this method regularly represents important benefits for your child’s diabetes and life-long health. The figures below (generated from local Coventry data) shows that children and young people who regularly follow the weighing method have significantly lower HbA1c levels:

MethodHbA1c average
Look and guess78mmol/mol
Picture estimation71mmol/mol
Scales and labels60mmol/mol

Therefore, we always recommend weighing your food and then using our app to work out and learn how many carbohydrates are in that item. If unsure, always consult the product packaging.
